Title: Beyond Threads
Threads (pthreads or winthreads) are the “default” approach to introducing parallelism into applications. In this talk I will explain why threads are the wrong abstraction, and show other options that are both simpler to use and more scaleable than threads.
Jim started working on parallel programming at Inmos with Dave May in 1979. He is one of the founders of Meiko a (now extinct) parallel super-computer company that was based at Aztec West, and was a sub-committee chair on the MPI-1 forum. He now works for Intel (from his house in Bishopston) worrying about how to make it easy for people to program all the cores Intel insists on making.
